Livelihood improvement of rural villages in seven districts of Sri Lanka gets the Cabinet nod

Dec 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka Cabinet gave the nod today to implement a project to develop the rural communities and their livelihood in seven districts.
The Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development, to implement the Phase II of the Community Development and Livelihood Improvement Project in Badulla, Monaragala, Hambantota, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and Polonnaruwa Districts.
The World Bank has approved an IDA Credit of US Dollars 75 million for the Phase II of the project which is aimed at reducing rural poverty and promoting sustainable and equitable rural development under the Mahinda Chinthana strategy.
According to the government press release, the project will implement intra village development activities in about 514 selected most poor and poor Grama Niladari Divisions (about 875 villages) and inter village connectivity development in 10 Pradeshiya Sabha areas in the seven districts.
About 85% of the funds will be allocated to the development within the villages and development of connectivity across the villages.
