* Sri Lanka to implement business ventures under Hambantota Port Development project

Dec 24, Colombo: Sri Lankan government has identified several business ventures to be implemented under the Hambantota Port Development project in the South.

The Cabinet today gave its approval to Minister of Ports and Aviation, Chamal Rajapaksa to appoint two committees, a Negotiating Committee (CANC) and a Project Committee (PC) to identify and implement the business ventures required for the construction of the port.

The Committees are to prepare and call for Request for Proposals, from the interested parties for the commencement of business ventures and to evaluate and negotiate with the bidders on their proposals.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority has identified several business ventures needed to be implemented in the phase I of the Hambantota Port Project.

A cement grinding plant, a cement bagging plant, two fertilizer bagging plants, a vehicle assembling plant, a warehousing complex, operation of LPG plant, ship repair facilities, operation of non containerized cargo terminals are some of the ventures identified by the government.

The construction work of Phase I is expected to be completed by April 2011.

Development of a sea port at Hambantota is one of the priority projects in Southern Region under the 'Mahinda Randora' Infrastructure Development Project.
