Dec 20, Colombo: The Joint Election Committee of common opposition candidate General Sarath Fonseka has decided to appoint alleged LTTE financier Tiran Alles as their campaign manager for the upcoming presidential election.
However, the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, the other member of the opposition alliance has opposed the move to appoint Mr. Alles to the key post pointing out that his alleged financial dealings with the LTTE terrorists in the past would badly affect Fonseka's election campaign.
"We are all surprised with this decision to appoint Tiran Alles as the chief campaigner for General Sarath Fonseka's bid for the presidency since he had very bad track-record in terrorism financing," a JVP MP told ColomboPage on the condition of anonymity.
Alles, Chairman of Standard Newspapers Ltd and former Chairman, Airports and Aviation Services and a very close ally of the ousted minister Mangala Samaraweera, was taken into custody in May 2007 for his alleged financial deals with the Tamil Tiger Terrorists through his businesses.
The arrest was made following the investigations carried out by the Terrorist Investigation Department regarding the alleged LTTE connections with the CBE (Pvt) Ltd where Tiran Alles is the Chairman. Reportedly Alles had close links with senior Tiger leaders including Emilkanthan and Pottu Amman.
Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa at his maiden Election rally in Anuradhapura yesterday (19), pledged to the public that he would never accept money from Prabhakaran's parents for his election campaign like his opponent candidate General Sarath Fonseka.
General Fonseka publicly announced at his first press conference that he is planning to get support even from Prabhakaran's parents to defeat his former Commander-In-Chief, President Mahinda Rajapaksa in the forthcoming Presidential election.
