President encourages dairy farmers of Sri Lanka to meet country’s dairy requirement

Dec 16, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is committed to provide support facilities to dairy farmers in the country to improve their trade with the goal of achieving self-sufficiency, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.
Addressing over 3,000 dairy farmers from all over the country at Temple Trees yesterday (15), the President said his goal was to see a professional revolution in dairy farming to achieve self-sufficiency in dairy production in the not too distant future.
The President pointed out that the government spends 20 billion rupees annually to import milk powder products and this money could be saved and utilized for other development activities if the country could achieve self-sufficiency in dairy production.
He said he believes that the dairy industry is capable of meeting the dairy requirements of the country.
Ministers C.B. Ratnayake, Maithripala Sirisena and K.A. Baiz and MILCO Chairman Kumar Abeysinghe also participated.
