Dec 16, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party lost two of its stalwarts, senior parliamentarians Johnston Fernando and Indika Bandaranayake when they pledged to support President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the upcoming presidential elections.
The two parliamentarians were sworn in as a minister and deputy minister this evening before President Rajapaksa.
Kurunegala District Parliamentarian, Johnston Fernando was appointed as Cabinet Minister of Land, Land Devaelopment, Human Settlement, and Ranaviru Welfare while Bandaranayake was sworn in as Deputy Minister of Natural Resources.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Janaki Hotel in Narahenpita, the two front liners of the opposition party said they decided to support the President because the UNP was not able to field a candidate under its own symbol elephant.
Fernando accused the UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe of engaging in revengeful politics to destroy the UNP while General Sarath Fonseka was trying to destroy the good name of the armed forces and the country.
"Ranil has betrayed the party while Sarath Fonseka betrayed the armed forces and the nation," Fernando said.
Fernando lamented that the UNP is being ruined day by day under the leadership of Wickremasinghe as efficient leaders had no place in the party.
President’s Secretary Lalith Weerathunge was also present at the swearing in ceremony.
