President meets IDPs, visits Madhu shrine

Dec 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa today toured the Northern region which is recovering fast from the decades-long war that devastated the region.
The President visited the welfare camps in Vavuniya where the displaced civilians are sheltered and met the people in the Chettikulam welfare center. The residents remaining in the camps warmly welcomed the President.
He inspected the facilities provided to the IDPs and issued instructions to the relevant officials to meet all the needs of the displaced. Later the President presented gifts to the people.
The IDPs expressed their gratitude to the President for all the facilities given to them until they are resettled in their former places of residence.
The government expects to complete the resettlement of the internally displaced by the end of January 2010.
Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen, Northern Province Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri, Commanders of the three forces, the IGP and the Government Agent of Vavuniya District Mrs. P. Charles and other senior officials accompanied the President.
President Rajapaksa attended a special religious ceremony at the sacred Madhu Church in Mannar and met the religious dignitaries of the church.
The Bishop of Mannar, Most Rev. Rayappu Joseph blessed the President and the religious dignitaries presented a picture of Madu Matha to the President to mark the occasion as he was the first Head of State to pay homage to the holy church after three decades.
The President later exchanged views with the crowed gathered at the Church premises upon hearing the news of President's visit.
