* Sri Lanka President visits the former battle ground in Northeast

Dec 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa this morning visited Puthukkudiyiruppu, the former battle zone in the Northeast to declare open a monument built to commemorate the hundreds of soldiers died in the battle.

President Rajapaksa opening the monument said the monument will stand in pride and honor to the valiant troops who protected and united the nation.

"I believe the security forces will offer their maximum support to rebuild the country after ending the three decades of terrorism in the country," he said.

The government has taken the imitative to strengthen the moral of the country's soldiers and increased the welfare facilities provided to them. A comprehensive housing scheme projects are now being implemented and initiatives have been taken even to provide facilities to the families of war heroes, the President said.

Following the ceremony the President mingled with the members of the security forces and discussed their welfare.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, commanders of the three forces and many other senior army officers were present at the event.

Puthukkudiyiruppu in the Mullaitivu District was the last stronghold of the LTTE. It is where the final battle between the Sri Lankan security forces and the vanquished LTTE was fought in May this year.
