Troops continue to find hauls of weapons in Sri Lanka's former war zones

Dec 02, Colombo: Sri Lankan troops conducting search operations in the former battle fields of Northern and Eastern regions continue to recover large hauls of weapons and ammunitions, the military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said today.
A Naval intelligence Team in the East acting on information received has recovered a large haul of explosive materials carefully packed and buried in the general area of Puthukkudyiruppu East, Iranamadu on last Sunday, defense officials reported.
The mine cache included 120 Claymore mines, a 30 kg sea mine, one 25kg and two 20 kg Anti Vehicle Pressure mines and number of grenades.
In a separate operation an intelligence team attached to SLNS Thammanna recovered a T-56 weapon and three hand grenades in the general area of Thullikudirippu in Thalaimannar on Monday while Army troops conducting operations in Wanni, Mullaitivu and Trincomalee areas yesterday recovered 3000 FNC ammunition among other things.
Arms and explosives, buried by the LTTE before they were defeated, need to be removed from the areas where the displaced are to be resettled prior to their rehabitation in the area.
