* Suspects of the IT student assault case identified

Aug 31, Colombo: The student of the ICT institute in Malabe who was assaulted by a wife and son of a senior police officer along with few other policemen in Sri Lanka has identified five of his assailants today in identification parades held before a magistrate.

Thirteen suspects including the wife and son of SSP Vaas Gunawardena, and other police officers accused of abducting and assaulting the 21-year-old, Nipuna Ramanayake were produced this afternoon to an identification parade held before the Kaduwela Magistrate.

The student and his friend identified five suspects. Sub Inspectors Indika Pushpakumara and Shantha Vithanage and police constables Janith Priyankara, Ruchira Chandima and Dinesh Dayawansa were the five suspects.

All suspects including the wife, Shyamali Priyadarshani Perera, and the son, Ravindu Gunawardene of the SSP Vaas Gunawardena were ordered to be remanded further.

The Magistrate is to hear the case again tomorrow to conduct identification parades to identify the other suspects.

Reportedly Ramanayake was abducted at gunpoint by three armed personnel in plain clothes and assaulted by the son and the wife of the SSP.
