* Sri Lanka Prison Department to rehabilitate drug addicts

Aug 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Prison Department will launch the first phase of a special programme aiming to rehabilitate inmates identified as drug addicts, today at the Pallekale open prison.

According to the Commissioner General of Prison, V.R de Silva 500 inmates have been selected for rehabilitation.

The prisoners are to receive necessary medicine and counseling facilities to overcome their addiction. The Department aims to provide the prisoners with vocational training. Following the successful completion of the program, the addicts are to be released into the society.

According to the Commissioner the second phase of the rehabilitation programme will be begin at Weerawila and Taldeniya open prisons soon. Nearly 4,000 inmates are to be rehabilitated at this stage.
