Postal services to be improved in Northern Sri Lanka

Aug 30, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is taking measures to improves the postal services in the North, Post Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake said.
During the three-decade long war the postal service in the region has been severely affected due to Post Office buildings being either damaged or demolished.
With the end of the war the Postal Department has taken measures to bring the postal services in par with the rest of the country and to provide same standard of services to the Northern region.
Dissanayake said welfare villages have already been provided with postal services. A Training Institute is functioning in Jaffna to train postal staff. The Jaffna Postal Complex is being reconstructed at a cost of Rs. 70 million.
Discussions are also continuing with security units on the transportation of mail along the A-9 road as at the moment Sri Lanka Air Force aircraft are used for urgent mail transfer to Jaffna.
