* Sri Lanka TV transmission to go digital

Aug 27, Colombo: Sri Lankan government is taking steps to convert the television broadcasting in the country from analog to digital to keep pace with the global development in TV transmissions.

Minister of Mass media and Information Anura Priyadharshana Yapa received the approval from the Cabinet today to adapt the European standard of digital transmission technology (DVB-T) to television broadcasting in Sri Lanka.

With the objective of introducing digital terrestrial TV broadcasting in Sri Lanka by the year 2015, the Cabinet approved an allocation of 150 million for Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation and Rs. 150 million for Independent Television Network in 2010 budget, to purchase equipment and antennas required for the digital technology, the government said.

However, the Minister pointed out that when digital broadcasting is introduced, the viewers have to purchase TVs with digital technology or box to receive the digital signal and convert it to analog to view the programs.
