* Sri Lanka to revive all closed tea factories
Mon, Aug 24, 2009, 07:09 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 24, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government plans to reopen all the state-owned tea factories that have been closed for number of years.

Sir Lanka's Minister of Agriculture, D.M. Jayaratna has directed his Ministry to take necessary measures to reopen the tea factories to boost the production to meet the demand.

Out of over 650 tea factories that are registered with the Sri Lanka Tea Board about 50 have been closed for various reasons, the government says.

Some of the state-owned tea factories were burnt down by the Marxist insurgents during their uprising in the South in 1988-89 period.

Sri Lanka has not been able to meet the increasing global demand for its tea and the government wants to increase the production of the cash crop.
