Saturday, March 28, 2009, 14:47 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 28, Colombo: The Sri Lanka government says the total number of people who die in road accidents is greater than the number of people killed by the LTTE annually.

Speaking to the media, Transport Minister Dullas Alahaperuma said that every four hours, one person dies in Sri Lanka due to a road accident.

According to the Minister’s statistics, nearly 2200 persons are killed annually by accidents in Sri Lanka.

He pointed out that many accidents involve a fraudulent driving license. Last year, 35% of all accidents involved such licenses, Mr. Alahaperuma said.
