Saturday, March 28, 2009, 14:42 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 28, Colombo: The Sri Lanka Police Department has decided to establish a few official dog units for police stations in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The Deputy Director of the unit, Assistant Superintendent of Police Lal Senevirathna, said the main goal is to search for land mines and weapons hidden by the LTTE.

According to ASP Senevirathna, they have already started training thirty German Shepherd and Belgium Malinois dogs for this purpose.

The Police Department hopes to establish two special dog units at the new headquarters to be constructed in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu.
