* Health workers on strike in North Central Sri Lanka
Wednesday, March 18, 2009, 4:46 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 18, Anuradhapura: All the health workers in North Central Sri Lanka, including the staff of Anuradhapura hospital where most of the injured soldiers at battlefront receive treatments, commenced a one day strike today.

Dr. Aruna Palitha Sampath, Secretary of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) Anuradhapura Branch, said the main reason for this strike is to protest the inability of the police to arrest the suspects of the attack on the Regional Health Service Director of North Central Province, Dr. W. Athapaththu last month.

The rest of the medical staff in North Central Province has also joined the strike this morning supporting the doctors over this issue.

However the doctors are ready to treat the soldiers getting injured in the battlefields, Dr. Sampath assured.

An unidentified group attacked Dr. Athapaththu on February 6th near his residence at Pulankulama in Anuradhapura, police said.
