Tuesday, March 17, 2009, 5:31 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka government has introduced a new condition for the paddy farmers who cultivate under the massive irrigation projects to obtain urea fertilizer for Rs. 350 per 50 kilogram packet.

Agriculture Ministry said the farmers wish to buy the urea fertilizer for Rs. 350 per packet should sell 200 kilogram per each acre of their harvest to the Sri Lanka Paddy Marketing Board.

If any farmer fails to meet this condition they would not be qualified to buy the urea fertilizer for Rs. 350 in the next season, the Ministry added.

Additionally, the paddy harvest being sold to the Board should meet the standards set by the PMB, the Agriculture Ministry noted.

Sri Lanka Paddy Marketing Board hopes to buy the harvest at a maximum of Rs. 30 per kilogram.
