Jan 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka parliament today passed a draft on granting citizenship for the Indian origin Tamils in the country.
According to the sources the draft presented by the Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka was passed this evening without a voting.
Addressing the House the Premier said under this draft nearly 150,000 Indian origin Tamils will obtain Sri Lankan citizenship in the near future.
He further said that every person should have citizenship of where they are living at the moment.
Most of the Indian origin Tamils lives in the upcountry as estate workers.
