Jan 08, Colombo: Parliamentarians of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) walked out of the Parliament this morning in protest of Speaker's decision to schedule the debate on the no-confidence motion brought by the party against the government on Friday (09) .
Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara announced the House this morning that he has decided to fix Friday for the no-confidence motion debate and sittings hours are to be extended as needed.
At this moment the Chief Opposition Whip Joseph Michael Perera asked for another day as most of the UNP parliamentarians are unable to participate in the debate on Friday.
The opposition has sought two days in the third week of January for the debate from the Speaker, but he rejected it.
As a result of Speaker’s decision the UNP parliamentarians walked out of the Parliament until further notice.
Sri Lanka government yesterday said it wants to conclude the debate on no-confidence motion this week.
