* Emergency extended in Sri Lanka

Jan 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka parliament voted to extend the Emergency Law for another month with a majority of 106 votes this evening.

In the voting 113 parliamentarians voted for the bill while only 7 voted against it.

Only the Tamil National Alliance parliamentarians voted against the bill while the main opposition United National Party and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) abstained from voting.

Faizal Cassim of the SLMC however voted with the government.

The Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and National Freedom Front have voted for the emergency with the government.
