Political analysts note the acknowledgment of military victories, though not by the party leader, marks a policy change for the UNP.

Jan 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition party, the United National Party (UNP), has asked the government not to use war victories as political propaganda.

Speaking at a special press briefing in Colombo this morning, UNP parliamentarian John Amaratunga said the huge successes of the security forces are not a political win.

The security personnel do not belong to any political party, said Mr. Amaratunga.

Congratulating the forces on their recent victory in Kilinochchi, MP Amaratunga made his party’s tribute to the war heroes.

He said the LTTE leader is living without support today as the forces are marching forward to his strongholds.

In the press conference, the UNP wished all success for the forces on their next target, Mullaitivu city.
