Friday, January 30, 2009, 15:50 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 30, Trincomalee: The Harthal (protest campaign) called by the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians in Trincomalee and Vavuniya has been unsuccessful, sources from the area said.

The TNA parliamentarians have planned to stage this Harthal throughout the day to demonstrate that the Tamils in the embattled Wanni haven't any assistance from either party.

TNA has urged the people and the traders in Trincomalee and Vavuniya to close down all the shops and offices to support the Harthal. However according to the protest campaign was totally unsuccessful as the people have not complied with the TNA request.

The two police stations in Trincomalee and Vavuniya confirmed that the day to day activities of the two cities have functioned smoothly without any disturbance.
