Sri Lanka::
* Sri Lankan troops enter LTTE capital of Kilinochchi
Friday, January 2, 2009, 6:32 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 02, Colombo: Sri Lankan troops have already entered into the Tamil Tiger's de facto capital of Kilinochchi town perimeter from the northern, southern and western edges and the fall of Kilinochchi is imminent, the military said on Friday.

Having captured the Tiger strongholds of Paranthan and Iranamadu junction troops of Task Force 1 continued their advance in a multi-pronged offensive operation on LTTE defences from west and north of Kilinochchi.

Defence officials said troops of Task Force 1 are advancing towards Kilinochchi from both the east and west of A -9 road while troops of 57 Division are moving from west and south of Kilinochchi after gaining total control of Adampan located south of Kilinochchi.

Defence sources said there is no option for the Tiger rebels but to flee further into the jungles in Puthukuduiruppu and Vishvamadu east of Iranamadu Tank.

Troops captured the key LTTE garrison of Paranthan yesterday morning and later in the day took control of Iranamadu Junction paving the way to Kilinochchi.

Troops have been systematically closing in on Kilinochchi since September capturing several LTTE strongholds along the way amid heavy rebel resistance. Both sides have suffered heavy casualties, defence analysts say.
