Jan 23, Colombo: Continuing the harassment of media personnel in Sri Lanka, an unidentified gang has assaulted and stabbed the Chief Editor of the Sinhala weekly newspaper Rivira, Upali Tennakoon, this morning.
Police spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Gunasekara confirmed that Tennakoon and his wife were assaulted at Imbulgoda in Gampaha while they were on their way to the office in Colombo.
Injured journalist and his wife have been admitted to a hospital in Colombo. His injuries are non critical, sources said. The attackers have also damaged his vehicle.
The motive for the assault is not yet known, police said.
The attack comes two weeks after Chief Editor of Sunday Leader Lasantha Wickramathunga, was killed by unidentified gunmen on motorcycles as he drove to his office in Rathmalana.
