Jan 02 Colombo: A suicide bomb explosion near the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Headquarters in Colombo this evening killed two airmen and injured another 36. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.
According to the Military spokesman a female suicide bomber had tried to enter the SLAF Headquarters but was stopped by the sentries. The bomber has exploded herself in front of the entrance of the Air Force camp around 5.15 p.m.
Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said the security forces have arrested a suspect believed to be the supporter of the suicide bomber. Following the explosion the suspect has fled on a motor bike, but security forces and the people in the area have followed and arrested him.
Dr. U.P Ariyawansha, Director of the accident unit of the Colombo National Hospital said that 36 people have been admitted to the hospital and three of them are in life threatening conditions. Hospital sources said 14 airmen and 22 civilians were admitted to the hospital.
However the situation in Colombo Fort area is now under control, Military spokesman Brigedier Udaya Nanayakkara said.
The suspected LTTE attack came just hours after President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced the capture of Kilinochchi, LTTE rebels' political capital in the North.
