Jan 20, Colombo: One of Sri Lanka's great justices, former Sri Lanka Supreme Court Judge, Justice Mark Fernando passed away this evening at the age of 67 after a long battle with cancer.

Ending his distinguished carrier Justice Fernando prematurely retired in 2005 before his term ended after serving as the longest serving judge on bench.

Following his resignation a massive signature campaign was launched to persuade Justice Fernando to stay on to complete his term.

Justice Fernando took his oaths as an advocate of the Supreme Court in July 1963. He was appointed to the Supreme Court bench on 4 March 1988.

Justice Fernando was the son of a former Chief Justice H.N.G. Fernando and his grandfather, Judge W.M. Fernando was also a former judge of the Supreme Court.

Funeral arrangements are to be announced later, his family said.
