* LTTE is now restricted to only 172 sq km. says Sri Lanka Army

Feb 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army today said that the LTTE is now restricted to only 172 square kilometers of land in the Mullaitivu district.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Colombo this evening military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that all the army divisions are now carrying out their operations based on one map.

The forces are pounding the LTTE to limited areas day by day, the military spokesman further said.

Following the capture of 17 Sea Tiger camps from Selawathura on the Western coast to Pooneryn and nine Sea Tiger camps from Nagerkowil and Kokakuthudu on the Eastern coast, the entire Sea Tiger power has been destroyed, military spokesman said.

Brigadier Nanayakkara said that 6,590 civilians have safely reached the government controlled areas from January this year.

According to the spokesman, 3,848 in January 2009, 2,472 in February including 1,637 yesterday and 600 today (06) have arrived in cleared areas in Dharmapuram and Visuamadu areas and sought refuge.

Wounded civilians have been hospitalized immediately the Brig. Nanayakkara said.

Troops of 57 Division meanwhile captured the headquarters of LTTE's "Raja Regiment" located east of Visuamadu that provided security to the LTTE leader Prabhakaran.
