* Sri Lankan national athletes found guilty for human trafficking

Apr 04, Colombo: Exposing a major human trafficking operation, three Sri Lankan national athletes have been sentenced for one year rigorous imprisonment suspended for ten years and fined them Rs. 100,000 each when they pled guilty to the charge of human trafficking.

Prasanna Sampath Amarasekara, a gold medalist at regional level and a member of Sri Lanka's 400 meter relay team to the Olympics, Ms. G. Geetha Nandani and Ms. Lalani Shanthi Iranganie were arrested last year for their involvement in a human smuggling racket.

The three athletes were indicted under the Immigration and Emigration Act on charges of helping people to leave Sri Lanka using forged passports.

At the Courts, it was revealed that many more athletes are involved in this racket.
