Brawl creates tension in Sri Lanka hill country

Apr 29, Badulla: A tense situation occurred this afternoon in Badulla city due to a fierce clash between the supporters of two government Ministers, Arumugam Thondaman and Wadiwel Suresh.
Badulla police said a clash took place over the opening of a new political office by the Deputy Minister of Healthcare and Nutrition, Suresh Wadiwel.
Police riot squads had to intervene to control the supporters of the two factions after a tense drama in Badulla city.
Police has arrested few supporters of both parties who were involved in this clash. Police also found some batons and several stones inside the office.
Minister Arumugam Thondaman is the leader of Ceylon Workers Congress and Minister Suresh Wadiwel is a United National Party parliamentarian who crossed over to the government with sixteen other members.
