Apr 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition, United National Party on Friday called for a Parliamentary Select Committee to look into the finance company scandals in Sri Lanka.
Ten UNP MPs including Ravi Karunanayaka, Lakshman Kiriella, A.M.M. Naoshad, Ravindra Samaraweera and Jonston Fernando submitted a motion to the parliament calling for a committee to look into these scandals which had led the depositors to lose some Rs.300 billion.
The UNP also wanted to know why the Central Bank failed to monitor, supervise, and regulate the activities of these companies. It charged that the Central Bank had failed in its duty to prevent such scams and do justice to the depositors.
The party also asked that the PSC should do an in-depth study on the existing monetary law to prevent such scams in the future.
