* Emergency passed in Sri Lankan Parliament, PM says 155 military personnel were killed in month of August

Sept 09, Colombo: Prime Minister Rathnasiri Wickramanayaka told Parliament today that a total of 155 military personnel were killed and 983 others were wounded due to the LTTE Tiger attacks during August.

Opening the debate on the Emergency vote this morning, the PM said during the period between August 1 and September 1, 155 members of the security forces had made the supreme sacrifice to the nation and another 983 has been injured in confrontations with the enemy. Four civilians also died and 50 others sustained injuries in these attacks.<

Emergency was passed in Parliament today by a majority of 99 votes with 110 voting in favour and 11 against.

MP’s of the Tamil National Alliance had voted against the motion while the main opposition United National Party members were absent from the parliament when the motion was passed.
