Sept 03, Colombo: Sources close to trade union sector of Sri Lanka says that the planned union actions are likely to be postponed due to the current security situation of the country.
Dialogues are underway among the trade union coalitions to decide whether to carry on or to postpone the planned actions against the rising cost of living.
Trade Union sector has called for an island wide protest on September 09 that will be followed by a one day general strike in October. People’s Liberation Front (JVP) led National Trade Union Centre has also vowed to call a three day general strike.
However, the sources close to trade unions say that the leadership of the individual trade unions is urged by the membership to consider the ongoing military situation although the cost of living is appalling.
Political analysts point out that the recent victory for the government at the provincial polls indicates the peoples’ desire to end the war in the North and when the troops are in a drive to liberate the North from the terrorists stirring up union action will not be seen favorably by the masses.
