Tuesday, September 30, 2008, 12:00 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 30, Colombo: Doctors in Sri Lanka are planning to launch an island wide protest over a shooting incident of a female doctor in Hambantota last night.

Government Medical Officers Association's (GMOA) spokesman Dr. Upul Gunasekara said that the members of the GMOA are scheduled to meet next Thursday to decide on further actions regarding this protest.

According to Dr. Gunasekara, doctors in Hambanthota District have already begun a protest campaign on the incident.

Dr. W.D. Lakshmi was shot dead last night at her personnel dispensary in Bandagiriya, Hambanthota.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said a soldier attached to the Udawalawe camp has allegedly shot the doctor due to a personal reason between the victim and the suspected soldier.
