* Sri Lanka's main opposition party member assaulted

Sept 30, Kelaniya: Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha member of the Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Sumangala Samaraweera was allegedly assaulted by ruling party members this morning in the council premises.

Samaraweera, who was severely injured by the attack, has been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital for treatments.

According to party sources the attack was due to an internal matter. They say the attackers are supporters of the Minister Mervyn Silva, a controversial figure in the ruling party.

One journalist, who was at the scene when the clash erupted, also had received injuries.
