Sri Lanka::
* Ceylon Teachers' Union says it will participate in grading if salary anomalies issue resolved
Tuesday, September 2, 2008, 4:46 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Sept 02, Colombo: Ceylon Teachers' Union Chairman Joseph Stalin Fernando says that the teachers of his union will participate in grading of G.C.E. (Advanced Level) examination if amicable solutions will be granted to the issue of long standing salary anomalies.

Hearing a fundamental rights petition of a student regarding the grading of answer scripts, Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva yesterday advised the teachers' unions and the officials of the Ministry of Education to settle the issue through dialogue and report it to the Courts on September 08th.

Ceylon Teachers' Union was not named as a defendant of the case and the Supreme Court needed to know if the union, a major player in the boycott would agree to the settlement. Other major unions have agreed to settle the issue through dialogue.

G.C.E. (Advanced Level) grading has been paralyzed for weeks due to the boycott by the teachers.
