* Thermal power plant to be opened in Sri Lanka

Sept 02, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open the Kerawalapitiya thermal power plant next week, Ministry of Power and Energy said.

According to the Ministry sources a capacity of 300mw will be added to the national power grid through the Kerawalapitiy power plant.

In first phase of the project 200mw will be added to the National Power grid. In the second phase of the project a capacity of 100mw will be added to the power grid in 2009 January using steam energy, the sources said.

Sri Lankan authorities say the Kerawalapitiya Power plant will be able to minimize the power crisis in the country.
