* Sri Lanka state promotes bio fertilizer

Sept 01, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa will launch a project this morning to popularize bio manure.

The inauguration of the district level project ‘A fertile country with fertile soil’ takes place in Provincial Agricultural Research and Training Center in Pannala, Makandura this morning under the patronage of the President.

Sri Lanka state spends a massive amount of public money to provide a subsidy for imported chemical fertilizer for farmers.

For 2008, the government has allocated 15 billion rupees for fertilizer subsidies in the budget. However, all the money has been spent in mere five months and the government has decided to spend extra 25 billion rupees on the fertilizer subsidy pushing the total to 40 billion rupees.
