* Sri Lanka Marxist party sues against breakaway rebel leader's appointment to parliament
Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 4:53 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Marxist People's Liberation Front (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva filed a fundamental rights petition yesterday against appointing ex-rebel leader Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman to the parliament through national list.

JVP sought the Supreme Court to issue two injunctions to suspend Karuna's swearing in and to appoint JVP nominee Sujith Kuruvita to the parliamentary seat.

JVP argues that the appointment of Karuna who was a former terrorist and a person who was penalized under immigration and emigration laws was in breach of constitution under articles 12 (1), 14 (1), 14 (2).

JVP also points out that in accordance with the agreement between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and JVP, the latter should have three national list seats. JVP says that appointing a non-UPFA person to a UPFA seat is also illegal.

The defendants of the petition are United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) General Secretary Susil Prema Jayantha, Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara, Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman, The Acting Secretary of parliament Dhammika Kithulgoda and Election Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake.
