* Sri Lanka Foreign Minister assures the security of Tamils in the North
Wednesday, October 8, 2008, 19:17 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said the government is concerned about the Tamil people in the North and it will ensure their welfare, security and aspirations.

Addressing the Parliament last evening, the FM said the rebel group LTTE does not represent the Tamil community in Sri Lanka and the military action against the LTTE should never be perceived as action against the Tamil community.

Responding to the concerns expressed by the Indian National Security Advisor M K Narayanan, Bogollagama said “It is very important that all those who are concerned about Sri Lanka including the welfare of the Tamil community should perceive the marginalisation of the LTTE in the correct light.”

Foreign Minister said it is unfortunate that some of Sri Lanka’s friends too have been influenced by the malicious propaganda of LTTE.

India’s National Security Advisor M K Narayanan Monday summoned Sri Lankan Deputy High Commissioner G G A D Palithaganegoda and conveyed India's concerns over the military offensive in the LTTE controlled areas.

“The Government attaches the highest importance to the humanitarian needs of displaced persons and civilians in the areas affected by the conflict,” he said.

Condemning Monday’s suicide attack in Anuradhapura, the FM urged the international community to support Sri Lanka in its fight against terrorism.

“Yesterday’s attack makes it crystal clear that the LTTE is firmly and irreversibly entrenched in the path of violence and terrorism. The onus is on the international community to support Sri Lanka, by taking concrete and tangible measures to combat terrorism,” he said.
