Oct 08, Colombo: Sri Lanka Supreme Court Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva today delivering a landmark judgment against the illegal allocation of state land to a private golf course project, Waters Edge fined former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga for Rs. 3 million.
Chief Justice ordered to cancel the golf course project and return the land and buildings at the Water's Edge Golf course to the Urban Development Authority (UDA) saying that the allocation of the land which was located near the parliamentary complex and meant for public purposes for a golf course is illegal.
The petitioner, Sugathapala Mendis had alleged that President Kumaratunga misdirected the Cabinet, when the state land at Battaramulla was allocated to a private project to construct the Waters Edge Golf Course.
The petition said the land that had been earlier acquired by the Urban Development Authority for a public utility purpose was reallocated for the construction of a golf course and requested the Court to confiscate the money involved.
