Sri Lanka::
* Sri Lanka Marxist party to seek Supreme Court intervention to prevent TMVP leader Karuna becoming a MP
Tuesday, October 7, 2008, 3:33 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 07, Colombo: It is reported that Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna (JVP) has decided to seek Supreme Court intervention to prevent the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) Leader, Vinayagamoorthi Muralidaran alias Karuna being sworn in as a Member of Parliament representing the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

JVP says the appointment is against the memorandum of understanding agreement signed between the JVP and the UPFA.

According to political sources, JVP, being the key stake holder in creating the People's Alliance party to win the election against the main opposition United National Party in 2004, believes that the vacant parliamentary seat due to the resignation of JVP MP Wasantha Samarasinghe has to be filled again with a JVP nomination.

Samarasinghe resigned from the parliament to contest in the recent Provincial Elections.

Sri Lankan government in a gazette notification yesterday announced its decision to appoint Karuna for the vacant seat.
