Oct 06, Colombo: Sri Lanka Locomotive Drivers' Union vowed to continue the strike for the third consecutive day demanding the workers who were interdicted following a train accident be reinstated and an assurance be given regarding the accuracy of the railway signal system.
One passenger was killed and 43 were injured in a railway accident at Ganemulla station on the main line last week.
The Railway Department charges the accident was caused by errors of the railway workers whilst the trade unions accuse that the faults in signal system are behind the accident.
The General Manager of Sri Lanka Railway Dr. Lalithasiri Gunaruwan said that the decision to interdict the workers responsible for the accident until the probe completed could not be changed.
The strike has already caused enormous inconvenience to the public during the weekend and the situation is expected to get worse for the commuters returning to work today.
