Oct 06, Colombo: Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) leader Vinayagamoorthi Muralidaran alias Karuna will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament representing the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), according to a gazette notification under Article 64(5) of the Constitution, the government announced today.
Karuna will be filling the seat left behind by Marxist party JVP MP H.M. Wasantha Samarasinghe to contest the North Central Provincial Council election on the JVP ticket.
Commissioner of Elections, Dayananda Dissanayake, in the said gazette notification, has, according to powers conferred on him by the Parliamentay Elections Act No.1 of 1981, has, declared Mr. Mralidaran elected as a member of the Sixth Parliament.
Karuna, a former colonel in the rebel group LTTE formed the TMVP in 2004 following his break-up from LTTE in 2003.
In March 2008 TMVP contested Batticaloa district local council election and won all the 9 councils. It contested Eastern Provincial Council elections in May 2008 under the ruling UPFA banner.
