Oct 31, Kelaniya: A tense situation prevailed in Kelaniya area today due to counter protest campaigns organized by the two main political parties in Sri Lanka.

A protest campaign organized this morning by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) to protest the assault on its Pradeshiya Sabha member in Kelaniya few weeks ago was met with another protest campaign organized in parallel by the controversial government minister and the MP of the area, Mervyn Silva.

Tension prevailed as the two protest campaigns faced each other near the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Sabha Office.

Police had stepped in to disperse the crowds who were throwing stone and rotten eggs during the face-off.
