* Corrupt prison officials in Sri Lanka beat a prisoner for refusing a bribe

Oct 29, Colombo: A jailer and a prison guard have reportedly beaten a prisoner in the Kegalle Prison for refusing a bribe of 500 rupees (US $ 5 approximately).

The prisoner who was unable to pay the amount demanded by the corrupt prison officials working at the Kegalle Prison was severely beaten and has been admitted to the Kegalle General Hospital. He was later transferred to the Dambulla General Hospital due to the internal injuries he has sustained.

Commissioner of Prisons, Maj. General Vajira Wijegunawardena denying that the officials sought a bribe has accepted that a prisoner has been severely beaten at the Kegalle Prison by his officers and admitted to the hospital.
