Oct 27, Colombo: A special Indian team of experts is scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka within the next few days to begin an undersea electricity cable project between India and Sri Lanka.
According to the Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Senaviratne this undersea electricity cable will be laid from Madurai in India and Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka.
The project aims to set up an interconnection of a electricity grid between India and Sri Lanka to enable Sri Lanka to source electricity from India. Under this project India will supply up to 1000 megawatts of electricity to Sri Lanka to overcome the power crisis in the country.
The project includes an overhead transmission line from Madurai to Rameswaram, an undersea cable from Rameswaram to Thalaimannar in Sri Lanka and another overhead line from there to Anuradhapura.
The initial study on this project has been already completed and according to the Ministry the Indian team will arrive for its implementation.
