* Sri Lanka Magistrate orders to stop production of Edna chocolates due to melamine contamination

Oct 14, Colombo: Colombo Additional Magistrate, Manjula Thilakarathne has ordered Edna Chocolates (Ceylon) Ltd. to stop production, sales, and export of Edna chocolates due to the usage of milk powder contaminated with melamine.

Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka, bringing to the notice of the Colombo Additional Magistrate has proved that Edna chocolates contain melamine which is harmful and not recommended for human consumption.

According to sources, Edna has imported its entire milk powder requirement from Quingdao Suncare Nutritional Technology Company in Hong Kong and mainland China.

Meanwhile, Consumer Affairs Authority of Sri Lanka accusing the producers of Edna chocolates, Buwaneka Rajamanthri Sriyani de Silva, Sriyan Tissa Edirisinghe, Kalyani Devagiri, Karunadasa Samarasinghe, Shanika Sriyani Edirisinghe, Mitra Dutugamunu Dewapriya de Alwis, and Lal Chndra Ekanayake, stated that it has found large stocks of milk powder in Edna warehouses not suitable for human consumption but being used to manufacture chocolates.
