Oct 13, Colombo: Sri Lankan government says it is considering producing nuclear power in the near future as a solution to future power needs in the country.
Sri Lankan Minister of Science and Technology Tissa Vitharana says this project would be a better answer to the rising power crisis.
ďAt the moment producing the nuclear power is the cheapest way," the Minister said.
The Minister says the Sri Lankan government is seeking Indian expertsí assistance to use the thorium deposits found along the Western coast of the country from Beruwela to Negombo as a source to produce electricity.
Thorium-based nuclear fuels would leave far less waste plutonium than conventional fuels. However, Thorium based nuclear energy is still in experimental stages and most countries do not use this technology for economic reasons.
