* Makeshift bridge commissioned on Sri Lanka southern coastal highway
Saturday, October 11, 2008, 14:47 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Oct 11, Colombo: A makeshift bridge has been commissioned today replacing the collapsed old Bentota bridge along the southern coastal highway, Galle Road that connects the southern cities to Sri Lanka capital Colombo.

The 200-year old Bentota bridge collapsed yesterday halting all vehicle movements between Galle and the nation's capitol Colombo for almost 24 hours. Vehicles to and from Galle were channeled through Mathugama and Elpitiya.

According to Police sources, with the new temporary bridge in place vehicle movements are routed back in the Galle Road from Bentota to Galle.
