Oct 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Trade and Consumer Affairs Bandula Gunawardena emphasized in the parliament yesterday the need to set up private universities to provide higher education opportunities at least for parents who could afford to do so since all students passing the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination could not expect to gain entry into local universities.
The Minister expressed this opinion participating in the debate on the supplementary estimate of 441 million rupees allocated for the Department of Examination.
Participating in the debate Minister of Education Susil Prema Jayantha said that 3,200 students who passed GCE Advanced Level examination last year had entered universities in the United Kingdom while another 3000 had sought entrance to universities in Australia. Further 300-400 students had also entered universities in the United States.
